Nothing is more frustrating than heading to your fridge, excited to make a new and exciting dinner, only to find that your fruit and veg has gone soggy.

To prevent this, here are some hacks that will help make the most out of your food.

Ditch the fridge

Fresh basil keeps fresher and tastier at room temperature with its stems in water.

Salad days

Greens should be a part of every healthy man’s diet but they go soggy quick. To stop this, line a plastic bag with some paper towel then blow into it and seal tightly. Carbon dioxide will keep the leaves crisp and crunchy.

Create your own hanging gardens

Onions can go rotten faster if they’re stored in plastic or on top of one another. Make them last longer by dropping one into pantyhose. Tie a knot above it then drop another one in. Do this until all the onions are strung up then hang on the inside of your pantry and you’ll maximize their shelf life and stop them from sprouting or getting mouldy.

If they make you cry then stick them in the fridge for 15 minutes before you cut them.

Give over ripening the slip

Wrap the bananas tips in plastic wrap to make them last longer.

Cold storage

Dice herbs and place them in ice cube trays with olive oil, then freeze to make them last longer. Add the cubes to soups or use them to grease the pan when you’re cooking meats that need flavouring like chicken breasts.

Be prepared

Homemade protein shakes are the cornerstone of every hard training man’s diet plan. To vary the menu, add small portions of nearly overripe fruit and the other ingredients – protein powder included – into zipper storage bags. Freeze them and add them to your blender for an instant protein fix.
