Before you empty the trash consider the fact that you might be chucking valuable sports performance aids. This is what you’re paying for, but may not be eating.

Mango skins

They may be a little tough to chew on, but it could be worth it. Research at the University of Queensland, Australia, found extracts from mango skin inhibited the development of human fat cells. So wash it off then slot it into your protein smoothie and you’ll notice that it actually makes it much creamier.

Apple cores

The real benefit comes from the core’s tremendous fibre hit that’ll help you feel fuller for longer and improve digestion. Don’t peel it either, because research at Cornell University found that the skin has anti-cancer properties.

Orange skins

This has tangeretin and nobiletin – flavonoids that can fight cancer, diabetes, cholesterol and inflammation. It’s pretty bitter so just add the peel to your smoothie or homemade fruit juice.

Grape seeds

Don’t spit – swallowing is far better for you. Grape seeds and their skins are full of antioxidants, found research published in Food Chemistry. They’re even showing promise in preventing bowel cancer.

Broccoli stems

The florets might get all the glory but the stems are nutritionally identical to the crown. They may offer a different texture but are great if you slice them thinly and stir fry in garlic and olive oil.
