Why 2017 Is The Summer To Drink Rosé Wine

To be honest most of us probably don’t need an excuse to drink more wine, but it turns out summer 2017 could be the perfect time to turn your attentions to the oft-forgotten rosé variety.

The pink drink can sometimes get a bit of a bad rep when compared to its popular red and white siblings, but this could soon change as research shows millennials are powering the rosé trend with 21% more rosé consumption than Gen X and Baby Boomers.

To make the most of this recent surge in interest, rosé-loving online fashion brand, Yes Way Rosé and wine sellers, Winc have teamed up to form Summer Water Societé, which claims to be the “first ever rosé wine club” based in Los Angeles.

And, not only can you enjoy the excitement of magnums of the pink stuff being delivered to your door all summer long, but you can guzzle it in the knowledge that there are also multiple health benefits to the tipple.

“Rosé wine contains a number of beneficial compounds that can have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant roles within our bodies,” says Faith Toogood, nutritionist at Make Your Switch. “They contain polyphenols which are believed to play a role in reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol within our bodies as well as lowering blood pressure.

“The benefits vary from wine to wine as they are linked to the grapes used (and, more specifically, the skins that are used as these are where these antioxidants and polyphenols are found). Drinking wine has also been linked more generally to improved cardiovascular function.”

Furthermore, its relatively low calorie content means you won’t mess up your beach body with a glass or two!

Tanya Zuckerbrot, dietitian and founder of the F-Factor Diet, says: “As far as summer drinks go, rosé can’t be beat. A five-ounce glass is only about 88-110 calories with 3-4 grams of carbohydrates; compare that to your typical screwdriver, which could set you back 180 calories and 18 grams of carbohydrates. You could have two roses for one screwdriver. Bonus: studies show a glass of wine per day can help improve cholesterol levels. That’s something to cheers about!”

Right, pass the bottle.
